Using Templates Calculator
Using Templates
Templates are interactive forms that control where data can be entered. Select a template in the list to show it. See [https://.../t/help_ios_extras | iOS Extras] for other methods to show a template.
Consider this example from the [https://.../t/68f56604c7d0ca5f08f4 | Percent Change] template:
[https://poweronecalc.s3.amazonaws.com/help/template.png]
White rows can be entered while grey rows are read-only. To enter data in a row, ++tap the row to display a field-specific keyboard++. ++To finish editing++:
- Tap the row again
- Tap the [icon--app-keyboard-down | keyboard dismiss] button on iOS or return on a physical keyboard
- Tap [icon--check-inverse | done button] to the right of the row
- Select the next row to change
- Tab to the next row or shift-tab to the previous row
++Enter the values you know++. PowerOne will either calculate what you don't or indicate to you which rows it can't solve on its own. [icon--app-equals-known | known value button] indicates that PowerOne knows the value for this row. If PowerOne does not know or isn't certain, it will display [icon--app-unknown-inverse | unknown or unsure value button]. Select [icon--app-unknown-inverse | unknown or unsure value button] to calculate that row's value.
Entering Data
Each row is designated as a specific type. Types include numbers, lists, dates, tables or strings, and each has its own keyboard:
Numbers
Use the on-screen keypad or a physical keyboard to enter numbers:
- 0 through 9 enters each of those numbers
- . or , for the decimal separator
- ± or − will add or remove the negative sign
- delete or backspace will clear or backspace as appropriate
- E will add exponential notation (long press the decimal separator on iOS or type E on your physical keyboard)
The format matches your Number Format setting. See Settings below.
Units
Units are the same as numbers except adds a unit to the end. The unit is optional. If not designated, the default unit for the row will be used which is designated by the template author. Whether you see Imperial or metric units first depends on your Unit System setting. See Settings below.
There are three special units: feet-inch, fraction inch, and hour-minute-second. ++**Feet-inch units**++ are entered in two parts, feet portion and an inch portion. The inch portion can be entered as a fractional number of inches: 2&1/2in or 3/4in. Type & to separate whole and fractional inches and / or control-/ to separate fractional inches.
++**Feet-inch units**++ are entered the same as feet-inch units but excludes the feet portion. Fractional inches can be entered as a fractional number of inches: 2&1/2in or 3/4in. Type & to separate whole and fractional inches and / or control-/ to separate fractional inches.
++**Hours-minutes-seconds**++ are entered with : separating each portion. 3:15:45 denotes 3 hours, 15 minutes, and 45 seconds while 15:45 assumes 0 hours.
++**Convert between units**++ by selecting a new unit after an existing unit has already been designated.
Note you can also change units on read-only rows. Tap the row and change the unit.
Lists
Select an option from the list of options.
Dates
Select one each from the day, month and year columns to create a date. The format matches your Date Format setting. See Settings below.
Tables
On iOS, enter each number in each cell as appropriate. New rows will appear automatically. Tap the row number to insert new rows or delete existing rows. Note that read-only tables can be shown by selecting the row.
On the web, enter each number separating columns by semi-colons and rows one per-line (select return or enter key to separate rows). Generally there are instructions underneath the table to guide you on rows and columns. Note that you can see the full table of read-only table rows by selecting the row.
Tables can be either numbers or units dependent on how the author wrote the template. Unit rows are entered the same as the Units section above, except for each cell. Note that the unit derived from the first cell (row 1, column 1) is the unit used to store all values in the table and will be presented with that unit, but entry can be in any mix of similar units allowed. For example, if a table calls for lengths then each cell could be entered as feet-inch, yards, meters, etc. Whatever unit is entered in row 1, column 1, however, will be used to store and display the entire table. Tables do not offer conversions but the output format can be modified by manually changing the value in row 1, column 1.
Strings
Type anything you wish into the text area. A string is any desired text. Note that you can see read-only string rows by selecting the row.
Clearing Templates
Select **CLR** on iOS or **Clear** on the web to return the template to its default state.
Tags
Tags are keywords or phrases that help you organize your templates. To add tags to a template, select [icon--app-more | extras button] then **Tags**. On iOS, either enter a new tag or select tags from the list of tags you have previously used. On the web, enter one tag per line either by typing or by choosing them from the list of previously used tags. Tags are case sensitive.
Above the list of templates, select the tag filter (defaults to **All⋁**) to see a list of tags you have used. Select one to see templates with only that tag.
There are three special tags: Trash, Favorites, and Quick Action. Selecting Trash will show all templates in your trash. Trashed templates are retained for 30 days before being discarded. Favorites is pre-created for you and available as a default tag.
Quick Action is used by 3D Touch in the iOS application. The first three templates designated with the tag Quick Action will appear when you 3D Touch the application icon. If not designated, the last three used templates will appear. To utilize this feature, add a tag called Quick Action for the desired template.
Sharing Results
To share the template's results, select [icon--app-more | extras button] then **Share Results**. On the web and iOS, your designated email client will display a pre-populated email. Premium subscribers can also save and share via other iOS share sheet options.
Settings & Profile
Settings
In the template, select [icon--app-more | extras button] then **Settings** to modify the text size or overwrite the current decimal or inch options.
- ++**Decimals**++: Sometimes it is helpful to view a different number of places than those designated by the author. This setting changes the decimal places displayed for all number values in the template.
- ++**Inches**++: Sometimes it is helpful to view feet-inch results in different fractional inches than those designated by the author. This setting changes the fractional inch displayed for all feet-inch values in the template. Internally the denominator adjusts to the selection, the numerator is rounded and finally the entire fraction is reduced.
- ++**Text Size**++: On the web, PowerOne can display the template in four different sizes: small, medium, large, or extra large. On iOS the size is determined by your Dynamic Type setting (Settings then Display & Brightness then Text Size).
In the list on iOS you can also set the theme, key clicks, and other options:
- ++**Theme**++: Theme in which to use throughout PowerOne.
- ++**Key Clicks**++: If set to on then PowerOne's keyboard plays click sounds when buttons are tapped. Note that string row keyboards use the built-in system setting instead.
- ++**Number Format**++: Show numbers in either 1,000.00 or 1.000,00 format.
- ++**Date Format**++: Show dates in either month/day/year, day/month/year or year/month/day format.
- ++**Unit System**++: For unit rows, this setting will show imperial or metric units first.
- ++**Currency Symbol**++: Some rows display a currency symbol before the value. These symbols are simply adornment and can be changed to the symbol of your choice.
Profile
On the web, besides modifying your name, email address or password, the profile also stores your number format, date format, unit system and currency symbol. Select [icon--app-more | extras button] then **Profile**. Any changes are synchronized across your devices and the web. (See Settings above for iOS.)
- ++**Number Format**++: Show numbers in either 1,000.00 or 1.000,00 format.
- ++**Date Format**++: Show dates in either month/day/year, day/month/year or year/month/day format.
- ++**Unit System**++: For unit rows, this setting will show imperial or metric units first.
- ++**Currency Symbol**++: Some rows display a currency symbol before the value. These symbols are simply adornment and can be changed to the symbol of your choice.
