Calculate the increased cadence needed when changing gears, especially downshifting, to maintain speed. It is also handy to map out the redundancies in your particular cassette and front sprocket set up. There are gear ratios that are duplicated usually.

- Back Cog: number of teeth on your back sprocket for the current gear.
- Runout: distance traveled in the one revolution of a wheel, measured in feet.

Examples
Example 1
What is the cadence required to maintain 7 miles per hour with your small front chain ring of 32 teeth and your rear 22 tooth sprocket, on a bike that has a runout of 6.3 feet?
- Speed: 7 mph
- Front Cog: 32 teeth
- Rear Cog: 22 teeth
- Runout: 6.3 feet
The cadence should be 67 revolutions per minute.
Example 2
When you downshift the rear sprocket to the 28 tooth, what cadence is required to maintain 7 miles an hour?
- Rear Cog: 28 teeth
The cadence should be 85 revolutions per minute.
