Help
Used to determine the total glucose administration rate (in milligrams per kilogram per minute) when 1, 2, 3, or 4 intravenous fluids containing glucose are infusing simultaneously. When less than four fluids are co-infusing, CLEAR the template first and only input values for those fluids that exist. Enter 0 for all additional values. A negative answer for DEXCONC or Fluid tells you that you cannot achieve your desired GIR without reducing either the concentration of dextrose and/or the rate at which it is infusing.
Rows
- Weight: the patient's weight
- DEXConc#1: dextrose concentration of the first fluid (as a percentage (example D5W = 5))
- Fluid#1 mL/HR: the infusion rate of the first fluid (DEXConc#1) in milliliters per hour
- DEXConc#2: dextrose concentration of the second fluid (as a percentage)
- Fluid#2 mL/HR: the infusion rate of the second fluid (DEXConc#2) in milliliters per hour
- DEXConc#3: dextrose concentration of the third fluid (as a percentage)
- Fluid#3 mL/HR: the infusion rate of the third fluid (DEXConc#3) in milliliters per hour
- DEXConc#4: dextrose concentration of the fourth fluid (as a percentage)
- Fluid#4 mL/HR: the infusion rate of the fourth fluid (DEXConc#4) in milliliters per hour
- Glucose Mg/kg/MINUTE: the milligrams per kilogram per minute rate that glucose is being infused at
Examples
Example 1
A 3kg patient has the following intravenous solutions infusing: D5W at 1.5 mL/hour, D10W at 7 mL/hour, and D7.5W at 2.5 mL/hour. What is his total glucose infusion rate? Input the following:
- Weight: 3kg
- DEXConc#1: 5%
- Fluid#1 mL/HR: 1.5
- DEXConc#2: 10%
- Fluid#2 mL/HR: 7
- DEXConc#3: 7.5%
- Fluid#3 mL/HR: 2.5
Tap the "=" symbol next to Glucose Mg/kg/MINUTE and the calculator gives an answer of 5.3.
Example 2
You decide that you want to increase his GIR to 7 without altering the total amount of fluid that you are giving him. What dextrose concentration would you have to change bag#2 to for this to be achieved? Input the following:
- Glucose Mg/kg/MINUTE : 7
Tap the "=" symbol next to DEXConc#2 and the answer is 14.3%. Change this to 14% and tap the "=" symbol next to Glucose Mg/kg/MINUTE to find that this will achieve a GIR of 6.9 Mg/kg/MINUTE.
