Help

Calculates the maximum overcurrent protective device allowed for non-motorized appliances in accordance of Article 422 of the 2014 National Electrical Code. See additional Code Commentary at the end of this overview.

Rows

- Appliance Rating: Enter the rating of each appliance in watts, kilowatts, or amps. Rating should only be entered into one box in this section. Unused boxes must be left blank.
- Connected Load: Select the system voltage that the appliance will be connected to.
- Voltage Rating:Select the system voltage that the appliance will be connected to.
- OCPD: Select the type of OCPD.
- Max OCPD: This is the maximum amperage rating allowed for the overcurrent protective device for this appliance (usually a fuse or circuit breaker).

Notes

In all cases, if the nameplate or manufacturer's instructions specify a maximum overcurrent protective device that differs from this calculator, sections 110.3(B) and 422.11 of the 2014 National Electrical Code require compliance with all provided instructions for listed equipment and the maximum value specified may not be exceeded.

Examples

Example 1

Calculate the maximum overcurrent protective device allowed for a non-motorized appliances with the following data: 12 amps and 1∅, 120 volt rating on a circuit breaker.
- Appliance Rating: 12
- Connected Load: Amps
- Voltage Rating: 1∅, 120 volts
- OCPD: Circuit Breaker
The maximum OCPD is 20 amps.

Example 2

Calculate the maximum overcurrent protective device allowed for a non-motorized appliances with the following data: 7500 watts and 3∅, 208 volts on a circuit breaker.
- Appliance Rating: 7500
- Connected Load: Watts
- Voltage Rating: 3∅, 208 volts
- OCPD: Circuit Breaker
The maximum OCPD is 35 amps.
